List of Underwriters There are numerous Stock broker firms companies in the United States that participate in initial Public Offerings (IPO's) and private placements. These companies range from small companies with a few offices and under 100 brokers to large companies with hundreds of offices and thousands of stock brokers. Most firms have certain criteria which they follow in participating in underwritings of companies and being a marketmaker in a company's stock. Larger firms usually will not act as lead underwriter for deals under $20 million but may participate in smaller deals, while smaller firms cannot do the larger deals but may participate. Firms may establish certain other criteria, such as not participating in offerings of a startup company, a company must have certain minimum sales, minimum assets and/or profits, a company may have to be in a particular geographic area, a company may need a specific product or service line, and other criteria. Some underwriters will act as a "lead" underwriter while others participate in underwritings. When preparing for a public offering, it is very important to know and understand which underwriters might fit the specific company needs. A partial list of Underwriters in the U.S.
